The Gov.pt app offers citizens and businesses a single, convenient and secure access point to official documents and essential public services. The Digital Mobile Key, already adopted by +5 million users, ensures secure and legally recognised digital interactions. Key features include:
- Official documents – access to 43 certified documents (e.g., Citizen Card, Driving Licence, Car Insurance and Student Card) with the possibility of managing other people’s documents, providing a comprehensive solution for families
- QR code login and document validation – guarantees fast and secure access to services both online and in person;
- Transactional services – including the automatic renewal of the Citizen Card and Driving Licence and the change of address in the Citizen Card.
- Since January 2026 - seamless access to the Digital Business Wallet, with dedicated documents and services for companies and sole proprietors
Goals
The Gov.pt app focuses on the centralization of services, the digitization of processes, and time and cost savings for citizens, businesses and the Public Administration, addressing the critical challenge of simplifying and modernizing access to digital public services by making it more seamless, secure, and efficient.
With a user-friendly design, the app aims to bridge digital divides, foster transparency, and ensure that essential services are accessible to everyone, regardless of background or location.
Main features and innovations
Launched in December 2024, the Gov.pt app evolved from the previous Digital Identity Wallet, ID.Gov, which had been available since 2019.
The app simplifies administrative processes, allowing users to retrieve and present official documents via their smartphones, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and empowering citizens and businesses to engage more efficiently with public and private services and authorities – the business component is available since January 2026.
Also, through the use of common platforms like the Portuguese Interoperability Platform and the Digital Mobile Key, promotes greater efficiency and the integration of features such as transactional services (e.g., document renewals), secure authentication and qualified signatures, while supporting a multi-profile approach that allows the app to be used by both natural and legal persons, legal representatives and other organizational profiles.
Impact
The Gov.pt app steady uptake is aligned with the global trend towards mobile government and reflects a real, positive impact in end-users’ lives, who benefit from more convenient, faster, secure and inclusive public service delivery.
There are already +2,6 million user registrations and over 9,2 million citizen documents added to the Portuguese digital wallet (including 2,2 million Citizen Cards, 2,1 million Car Insurance document, 2 million Car Registers and 1,8 million Driving Licences), while the business component encompasses more than 13.400 companies enrolled and +52.100 business documents issued since January 2026.
