The Portuguese Digital Business Wallet (BW), launched in January 2026, brings together business documentation on a single, secure and up-to-date platform integrated into the gov.pt app (the Portuguese digital identity wallet), promoting administrative efficiency and regulatory compliance.
The development of the Digital Business Wallet, which aggregates public sector information and digital identity mechanisms, required the implementation of an interoperability system across the entire public administration, with coordination among multiple public entities being led by ARTE.
Goals
This solution aims to simplify the interaction between companies and the State, eliminating physical certificates and speeding up documents and information acceptance by public and private entities in public tenders, licensing or commercial negotiations.
Main features and innovations
The Digital Business Wallet covers both companies and individual entrepreneurs (IE), integrating:
- The Professional and Business Activity Card;
- The Tax Authority tax status;
- The Social Security contributory status;
- The Central Register of the Beneficial Owner;
- SME Certification.
All documents and information provided have official value, are automatically updated from the national base registries and include real-time validation through QR Code.
Access to the Digital Business Wallet is free of charge and made through the Gov.pt application, using secure authentication with the Digital Mobile Key (the Portuguese mobile digital identity mechanism with a "High" level of assurance, the maximum degree recognized by the European eIDAS Regulation), and is available to the company's legal representatives and duly registered persons with powers of representation.
Available services include paperless invoices and the Permanent Certificate code. The Business Wallet also allows users to receive notifications and accountability alerts, in addition to authentication and electronic signature functionalities.
Impact
The Digital Business Wallet is a major milestone towards the streamlining of companies’ everyday life, providing simpler and faster access to essential business information, increasing efficiency in internal and external procedures, and strengthening interoperability, allowing for agile responses to administrative and legal requirements, from licensing processes to participation in public tenders.
The uptake of the Digital Business Wallet has been very significant: there are over 13.200 companies enrolled in the wallet, with 51.300 documents added to the app and +10.000 regular users (one user can be entitled to manage more than one company).
