Portugal delivered a strong performance at the 2026 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), securing nearly 200 medals and highlighting the quality and diversity of its wines. Portuguese entries received 14 gold medals and more than 45 silver medals across the competition.
Port and the Douro led the regional medal table, with 37 medals each, followed by the Setúbal Peninsula and Vinho Verde, with 22 medals apiece. Alentejano and Lisboa each secured 16 medals, while Dão received 15.
Among Portugal’s highest-scoring wines was Kopke Colheita 1957, which was awarded 98 points and a gold medal, placing it among the highest-scoring wines in the entire competition.
Portugal’s renowned fortified wines once again stood out, with Port and Madeira among the highlights of this year’s judging. Judges also identified a clear trend towards fresher Portuguese still wines, with less pronounced oak influence and greater emphasis on fruit, elegance and drinkability.
Douro white wines performed particularly well, with judges highlighting their texture, expressive fruit and vibrant acidity.
In November 2026, the IWSC will hold its first Global Judging in Portugal, providing a further opportunity to showcase Portuguese wines internationally and strengthen connections between Portuguese producers and wine industry professionals from around the world.
