The European Commission has launched the RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) pledging initiative to mobilise private-sector and philanthropic support for researchers working at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and science, complementing existing public funding.
Announced at the European AI in Science Summit in Dublin, the initiative aims to accelerate scientific breakthroughs, strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity and competitiveness, and foster closer collaboration between industry and the scientific community.
As part of the EU’s AI in Science Strategy, RAISE will bring together in-kind contributions from companies and philanthropic organisations. These may include access to advanced AI models, computing capacity, research software licences, datasets, training and other resources to support scientific discovery.
Initial commitments have been made by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Nvidia, Elsevier, Sanofi, Frontiers, Mistral and Google DeepMind. The initiative remains open to further contributions from organisations willing to provide sustained support for AI in science beyond their direct commercial interests.
In a related development, Mistral AI and CERN have announced a partnership to develop what is expected to become the largest foundation model in physics. The collaboration reflects the initiative’s objective of combining Europe’s scientific expertise with industrial innovation to accelerate progress in AI-driven research.
Eligible contributions may also include financial support, cloud services, scholarships, fellowships and training programmes. The initiative will be reviewed annually, with commitments and progress presented at future editions of the European AI in Science Summit.
