Cascais Hospital has won the Silver Winner award in the Grand Hospital Award 2026, presented by the International Hospital Federation (IHF), ranking second worldwide. The award was presented at the World Hospital Congress, currently taking place in Seoul, South Korea.
Selected from more than 750 entries from 38 countries and territories, Cascais Hospital reached the final as one of eight nominees. According to information released by the hospital, this is the first time a Portuguese hospital has received an international distinction of this standing.
The award recognises the hospital’s overall performance across five areas: clinical quality and patient safety, patient experience, operational and cost efficiency, staff wellbeing, and equitable access to healthcare.
The distinction highlights the work of the hospital’s teams and its investment in innovation, technology, environmental sustainability and continuous improvement, alongside the efficient management of resources.
“It is an honour to receive this award. It recognises the work of Cascais Hospital’s professionals and the experience of the Ribera and Vivalto Santé groups,” said José Bento e Silva, Chair of the Hospital’s Board of Directors. He also highlighted the commitment to patient-centred care, humanisation and clinical excellence.
The result showcases the performance of a hospital within Portugal’s National Health Service (SNS), operated under a public-private partnership (PPP).
Waldkliniken Eisenberg, in Germany, took first place, while Sahlgrenska University Hospital, in Sweden, ranked third.
