Last year, the US was the fourth largest destination for Portuguese exports of goods, offering opportunities in various sectors. In the healthcare sector, for example, sales to the US reached €1.3 billion in 2023. Pharmaceutical preparations and medical instruments were the standout products, but emerging trends are related to telemedicine, digital health services, and sustainability.
The United States can be considered one of the most important markets for any trading partner, and Portugal is no exception. Portugal’s economic relationship with this market goes back many years, with consistently high levels of trade and American investment in our country. Traditionally, Portugal has maintained a positive trade balance, with around 4,000 companies exporting to the US.
In 2023, the US was the fourth-largest destination for Portuguese exports of goods and the sixth-largest investor in Portugal. This market offers significant growth opportunities for Portuguese companies but is also very demanding and has a unique business culture.
One of the growing sectors is life sciences. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Portuguese healthcare exports totaled €3.3 billion in 2023. The most exported products were pharmaceutical preparations (80 per cent of the total),medical instruments (14 per cent of the total), essential pharmaceutical products (4.7 per cent of the total), and radiological and electromedical equipment (0.7 per cent of the total).Bottom of Form
