Prime Minister Luís Montenegro went to Madrid on Monday to meet with his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sánchez.
The trip to Spain was the Prime Minister’s first official visit, a sign of the importance given to the historical ties and cooperation between both countries. The meeting will also be used to prepare the upcoming Luso-Spanish summit to be held this year.
Please recall that Pedro Sánchez publicly congratulated Luís Montenegro on 5 April, a few days after the new Prime Minister’s inauguration, claiming that both countries will continue to work together as "strategic partners and allies".
In the discussion on the Government programme in Parliament last week, the Prime Minister noted that Spain is Portugal’s "main trading partner" and that the entire Government’s goal is to "protect, safeguard the country’s interests and that of its citizens, institutions, and companies".
