According to Jornal Económico, this development has led to an increase in olive production in Portugal of more than 250 per cent between 2011 and 2021, and has allowed the average productivity of olive groves to triple over the last 20 years, says the study.
Portuguese olive oil is the best quality in the world and Portugal is preparing to become the third largest producer in the world by 2026 as a result of improvements in infrastructure and production practices.
The conclusion can be found in the study 'Oliviculture: The engine of national agricultural (r)evolution', developed by the consortium Consulai and Juan Vilar Consultores Estratégicos for the Association of Olive Growers and Wine Presses of Portugal - OLIVUM.
Thus, says the study, the production of the best olive oil in the world is due to "significant improvements in infrastructure and production practices that have allowed 98 per cent of Portuguese olive oil to be classified as Virgin or Extra Virgin by 2022".
The document emphasises that "Portugal will be the third largest olive oil producing country in the world in approximately two years' time. In fact, over the last four marketing years, the increase in national productivity has been much greater than that of the other main producing countries, which has allowed Portugal to rise from 9th to 6th largest producer."
