UPWIND Energy was created from long-term research conducted at SYSTEC, the Research Centre for Systems and Technologies of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), focusing on airborne wind energy systems (AWES). This technology uses airborne wind energy vehicles linked to a ground-based generator to capture stronger high-altitude winds, offering a new approach to renewable power in off-grid areas.
Unlike conventional wind turbines, AWES eliminate the need for towers and heavy foundations by relying on lightweight airborne systems. This significantly reduces material usage, simplifies deployment and enables energy production in locations where traditional turbines are impractical or impossible to install, such as remote or difficult-to-access regions.
In this context, UPWIND Energy is developing a portable generator designed for remote communities, disaster-affected areas and isolated economic activities that currently rely on diesel generators. These generators are widely used but are expensive, polluting and logistically demanding. The company aims to provide a cleaner, more affordable and easily transportable alternative.
