Although the presidency in Portugal is largely ceremonial, the role carries important civic functions, including the power to dissolve parliament under certain circumstances and to act as a guardian of the constitution. Analysts say Seguro’s mandate may emphasise democratic stability and institutional continuity at a time of political polarisation across Europe.
Seguro, 63, will succeed Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and is expected to take office in March 2026.
