Yoji Muto, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, and Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for Industrial Strategy and Prosperity, met to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening EU-Japan economic and industrial ties. Building on the Competitive Alliance launched at the thirtieth EU-Japan Summit in July 2025, they welcomed swift progress in bilateral cooperation, including memoranda of understanding and cooperation between key Japanese and European organisations in batteries and other strategic technologies.
In light of global trade and security challenges, they agreed on the need to deepen collaboration in strategic sectors such as critical minerals, batteries, and biotechnology. They stressed the importance of resilient supply chains that go beyond cost considerations and that can stimulate supply and demand in support of lead markets.
The meeting confirmed the intention of the EU and Japan to advance cooperation through policy dialogue, private sector partnerships, and investment opportunities. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based, free and fair economic order and expressed their determination to convene the expanded high-level economic dialogue agreed at the recent Summit at the earliest opportunity.
