The initiative positions Europe in the global race with the US and Japan for the certification of the technology.
Iscte: University Institute of Lisbon is installing the world's largest terrestrial multicore optical fibre testbed along the Yellow Metro Line. Jorge Costa, Iscte's Vice-Rector for Research, to Jornal Económico.
"This testbed creates unique conditions to study and validate the new optical fibre technology in real-world environments, on a scale and in a context that exist nowhere else in the world," said Jorge Costa.
The testbed, unveiled by Jornal Económico in this edition, will have a direct impact on Portugal's international standing in the field of optical communications and on Europe's position globally. "We are in a race with three contenders: the United States, Japan and… Europe."
