The Portuguese business school Nova SBE, based in Carcavelos on the outskirts of Lisbon, will be offering a new Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Studies, according to a press release.
The new degree program in Ocean Studies is an innovative and multidisciplinary course aimed at advancing knowledge for the sustainable use of marine resources. It was specifically designed to address the new global challenges related to the “blue economy”, or oceanography, and public policy related to the world’s seas and oceans.
According to the press release, the Bachelor’s degree course in Ocean Studies is the result of a strategic partnership between five academic units of Nova University Lisbon plus the University of Algarve and the University of Évora and will be offered by all of them. The program is said to also benefit from the participation of the Hydrographic Institute of the Portuguese Navy, which facilitates a practical and specialized approach to ocean studies.
With a strong practical component, the new program offers students hands-on experience in key areas such as tourism, fisheries, aquaculture and marine conservation. Immersion in real-world scenarios in the Algarve and Sines on the Atlantic coast to the south of Lisbon reportedly allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the ocean’s wide-ranging impacts and prepares future professionals for the challenges facing them in their careers, as the university writes in its press release.
The new Bachelor’s degree in Ocean Studies will be offered from the start of the 2025/26 academic year and held fully in English.
