The Portuguese Government has announced plans to invest €400m to strengthen its electricity grid. The investment is meant to fund a 31-measure package to enhance the resilience and security of the grid.
Among the measures, the Government plans to use €137m to accelerate previously approved projects (improvements and modernisation of the electricity grid), to launch a BESS auction by January 2026, and to allocate €25m to reinforce critical infrastructure such as hospitals, water and energy companies through the installation of solar PV and backup batteries.

The package also aims to create a "Green Map" with pre-approved areas for renewable power generation, with a strategic environmental study that doesn't require lengthy authorizations, and to simplify self-consumption projects and energy communities. It will seek to modernise the grid by creating a unified data collection platform and the development of a national electricity storage strategy combining chemical and hydropower technologies. In addition, the country is also exploring new cross-border electricity connections with the rest of Europe to enhance the stability and flexibility of its power network.

Portugal is interconnected with Spain only (3 GW for export and 3.6 GW for import).
