Axpo Poland and EDP Renewables have signed an agreement to optimize a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60 megawatts, according to a statement from Axpo, which is based in Baden in the Swiss canton of Aargau. The BESS facility, which will begin commercial operations in the Greater Poland region by 2027, will be able to store up to 241 megawatt hours of electricity.
The facility is one of the first of its kind in Poland, according to the statement. Axpo describes the partnership as setting benchmarks for the sector as well as representing an important step forwards for the energy storage market in the region. “Properly managed, energy storage systems can play a key role in mitigating these risks and stabilising our clients’ portfolios. Achieving effective optimisation needs strong financial foundations and advanced operational and technological capabilities. With these competencies in place, BESS exposure has become a strategic component of Axpo Poland’s comprehensive offering for the years ahead,” Mateusz Marczewski, Head of Origination and Member of the Management Board at Axpo Poland, is quoted as saying.
Axpo Poland will be responsible for the commercial management and optimization of the storage system, according to the statement. The plant's revenue model is based on minimum remuneration and revenue sharing – a combination that reportedly gives Axpo the flexibility to fully leverage the battery system’s market potential and stabilize the Polish power grid, writes the company. It also ensures financial predictability for EDP.
Axpo Poland provides services to around 35,000 companies in Poland.
