In 2024, inward direct investment transactions totalled €13.2 billion (€11.1 billion in 2024), mainly due to the investment made in equity of Portuguese entities (€11.1 billion). This amount includes €3.5 billion related to real estate investment.
In an immediate counterparty perspective, the investment by residents in European countries stood out in geographical terms in this period. Notably, Spain contributed €3.8 billion, Luxembourg €3.1 billion, and the Netherlands €1.4 billion.
Outward direct investment transactions
In 2024, outward direct investment transactions amounted to €7.2 billion (€5.7 billion in 2023). From an immediate counterparty perspective, investment in entities based in European countries was particularly noteworthy, with the Netherlands (€1.8 billion), Spain (€1.1 billion), and Luxembourg (€1.1 billion) standing out as the main destinations.
Stocks of foreign direct investment in Portugal (inward investment) and Portuguese direct investment abroad (outward investment)
At the end of 2024, the stock of inward direct investment was €200.3 billion, and the stock of outward direct investment totalled €76.0 billion. These values represented, respectively, 71% and 27% of Portuguese GDP.
Both stocks have been increasing since 2008, albeit at different rates: inward direct investment more than doubled between the end of 2008 and the end of 2024, while outward direct investment grew by 45%. As a percentage of GDP, and for the same period, Portugal showed an increase of 25 percentage points (pp) in the stock of inward direct investment and a reduction of 2 pp in the outward direct investment stock.
