Teemy bridges digital interaction and real-world locations, using gamification to enhance cultural engagement and tourism experiences. Founded in Braga and supported by the startups incubator and accelerator of the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (START@IPCA), the initiative was distinguished at Web Summit with the Best Performance Award in the Road 2 Web Summit (R2WS) Programme by Startup Portugal, worth 5,000 euros.
“If you’re not there, nothing happens” is Teemy’s motto, and that is precisely what Filipe Esteves, the company’s CEO, wanted to show the three teenagers he has at home. He began developing the application with the aim of encouraging users to explore the world, collect stickers and socialise in physical spaces.
The issue is not new and is perhaps one of the greatest concerns of parents, teachers and all those who feel that younger, or not so young, generations spend too much time in front of screens, endlessly scrolling. For Filipe Esteves, it was a personal challenge. “I have three teenagers at home and, for years, I looked for ways to keep them away from screens and bring back family activities, outdoors, with movement and real connection.” This was important for his family, but Teemy’s CEO knew the problem was global. “Today we spend more than 7 hours a day connected to screens, over 3 of which are solely on mobile phones, with clear impacts on physical and mental health.”
