Coloplast, a Danish multinational specialising in medical devices, has chosen Garcia Garcia to build its largest production unit in Felgueiras.
The factory, which represents an investment of €110 million and could create 800 new jobs, will be completed in the first quarter of next year. Located in the Alto das Barrancas business area in Revinhade, Felgueiras, “this will be Coloplast’s largest factory and one of the largest foreign direct investments in Portugal in recent years,” the construction company said in a statement.
The new production factory will be dedicated to the manufacturing of intermittent catheters used by patients with urinary retention with conditions such as spinal medula lesions or spina bifida, with production expected to start next year.
With a total area of 37,000m2, the new Coloplast factory will have sterilized areas to ensure the highest standards.
The total construction area is 56,000m2 spread out over three main buildings: one with 38,600 dedicated to production, a logistics building covering 5,300m2 and an administrative block with 6,300m2.
The company chose Portugal as the location for the new Coloplast factory because of “factors such as skilled labour, since Portugal offers highly-trained professionals; the strategic location, which allows us to efficiently serve the European market; and also sustainability, with Portugal having a significant supply of renewable electricity and a carbon neutrality target by 2050, aligning with the company’s sustainability objectives,” says the company.
The Coloplast factory could create up to 800 new jobs in the first phase and that the recruitment process was already underway according to the construction company that is specialised in the design and construction of logistics and industrial buildings.
With factories in Hungary, China, and Costa Rica as well as specialised production units in the United States, France, Germany, Sweden and Iceland, and an innovation centre in Denmark, the Danish multinational employs around 16.5,000 people.
