Stadler Rail AG, based in Bussnang in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, has signed an agreement for the delivery of 24 modern metro trains with the Metropolitano de Lisboa in Portugal.
As detailed in a press release issued by the Swiss rail vehicle construction company, the contract is valued at 134 million euros and also contains an option for the delivery of an additional 12 train sets. This marks the second contract that Stadler has secured from the operator of the metro system in the Portuguese capital. The trains measure 46.9 meters in length, offering room for 90 seated passengers in addition to two wheelchair spaces.
The total capacity is 450 passengers overall. The trains are equipped with a modern passenger information system, while large windows provide light and a good view of the above-ground routes. Nine double doors on both sides of the train allow for quick entry and exit. At present, the first train is undergoing testing on the existing Lisbon metro system, with the new trains set to serve the new Circle Line, which is currently under construction.
