Portugal will have a proton therapy cancer center installed at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Porto (IPO Porto).
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro at the signing ceremony of the protocol with the Amancio Ortega Foundation (FAO), IPO Porto and the Portuguese Government for the creation of the first National Proton Therapy Center (CNP) in the National Health Service (SNS).
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins and the Deputy Minister for Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida.
The Central Administration of the Health System (ACSS) was also present at the signing of the agreement that will allow the investment of 80 million euros in the purchase of two proton accelerators, funds donated by FAO. The ACSS will be responsible for ensuring the existence of financial conditions for the provision of healthcare to be made available at the National Proton Therapy Centre, through the creation, in a Programme Contract, of a line of activity for the production of assistance for proton therapy.
