The Commission of the European Union has approved the largest cross-border cooperation programme for the period 2021-2027 for cooperation between regions of Spain and Portugal.

The programme, which is also called the Interreg programme “POCTEP”, will receive an EU contribution of over €320 million over the period 2021-2027, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Commenting on the approval of the programme, Cohesion and Reforms Commissioner Elisa Ferreira said that it would create jobs, stimulate the climate and energy transition as well as will ensure better healthcare for people living in these regions.

“I am happy to see that the largest cross-border cooperation program in Europe has been approved. The number of challenges facing Europe’s regions today can only be met with increased regional cooperation. The POCTEP program exploits the full potential of cooperation between the border regions of Spain and Portugal. The program will create jobs, stimulate the climate and energy transition and ensure better health care for people living in these regions,” the statement of Ferreira reads.

The Commission explains that, among other things, the programme will support cross-border cooperation through networks between small as well as medium-sized enterprises to improve research and knowledge transfer.

In addition, the programme will also support sustainable tourism, help to preserve cultural heritage, and provide better healthcare infrastructure and vocational training for individuals living in the cross-border region.

“European Territorial Cooperation (ETC), better known as Interreg, corresponds to one of the two objectives of Cohesion Policy, and constitutes a framework in which national actors, regional and local authorities in different Member States can carry out joint actions and exchange views on the measures to be taken,” the Commission added.

Furthermore, the Commission pointed out that the main objective of this territorial cooperation between Spain and Portugal is to promote harmonious social, economic, and territorial development throughout the bloc.

This particular adoption is the 30th Interreg programme that has been adopted for the period 2021-2027 and represents a total amount of over €4 billion of funding allocated to Interreg under the European Regional Development Find.

The Interreg programmes were adopted in March 2022. Back in March, the Commission said that the approved programmes are “Interreg Austria – Germany”, “Interreg Central Europe”, and “Interreg Germany – Czech Republic”.

Back then, all interested parties in the territories concerned were invited to follow closely the calls made for projects.

Interreg is structured around four standards, which are cross border, transnational, interregional, and the integration of the outermost regions into the neighbouring environment.
