The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Tuesday welcomed the “historic result” of the European Council meeting, considering that it is excellent for Portugal and that the EU has given “proof of its strength”.

In a message published on the Presidency of the Republic’s website, the Head of State “welcomed this morning in Madrid the historic outcome of the European Council, which ended this morning in Brussels”.

According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “by agreeing on a budget of €1.82 billion for the next seven years, the European Union is proving its strength and dynamism, its ability to decide democratically in the difficult but fruitful dialogue between its 27 member states, with respect for all and in the pursuit of common interests”.

“For Portugal it is also an excellent result with the prospect of receiving more than €45 billion, a decisive aid to combat the social and economic crisis that the pandemic has caused, which we must use with rigour and criteria, constituting a new hope for the future of us all”, adds the President of the Republic.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has been in Madrid since Monday, where he will have lunch today with Felipe VI, after an invitation from the Spanish king at the reopening ceremonies of the border between Portugal and Spain earlier this month.
