Jerónimo Martins Group has announced an investment of €1.2 million in a solar photovoltaic energy system at its Valongo distribution centre in the north of Portugal.

The project will generate 2,121.48 MWh of renewable energy per year and help the retailer reduce its CO2 emissions by 530 tonnes, the company added.

The company has already installed 5,000 solar panels in the roof of the distribution centre covering an area of approximately 20,000 square metres.

The panels are fully operational and the energy generated by the system meets more than 30 percent of the building’s energy requirements.

It is also the third major investment by the company in a solar photovoltaic energy project in Portugal.

In 2018, the company commenced power production with 3,876 solar panels in its Algoz distribution centre in the south of Portugal and the Recheio store in Tavira with 1,600 panels.

By the first half of 2020, the retail group plans to open four additional photovoltaic power stations in the municipality of Lisbon.
